Philip Reed
b. 1993
Philip Reed pursues vocal music in a variety of forms as a conductor, singer, composer, and (ethno)musicologist. His areas of research include Gregorian chant, European sacred music before 1750, and Japanese music, especially Buddhist chant and gagaku. He is especially fascinated with reconstructing music of the past as a means of accessing the lived experience of past peoples, and his compositions seek to build upon the generations of creative labor woven through the world’s musical traditions.
A native of Greenville, SC, he received a B.M. in music composition from Furman University and an M.M. in choral conducting from the University of Georgia. He served as a choral scholar and assistant conductor at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Taylors, SC, for many years, and has featured as a guest conductor with Chicora Voices and S.C. Bach. He has recently been pursuing further graduate research into Shingon Buddhist chant in Tokyo.
