This tonal setting of Psalm 130 follows the strophic translation created by the Elizabethan poet and composer Thomas Campion. Each verse follows an original melody, which is elaborated upon progressively throughout the different verses. The piano part is constructed independently of the four voice parts and is equal to them in the overall construction of the piece. The piece is rooted thoroughly in the minor and supports the pleading nature of the words throughout. It is ideally suited to the season of Lent but would also complement any penitential service or memorial. It was created for the English-born conductor Philip Barnes, and his singers at the Third Baptist Church, which is in Grand Center, St. Louis, Missouri. Duration: 4:35
