Brandon Spencer was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Spencer's art songs and solo spiritual arrangements have been performed at the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) and African American Art Song Alliance conferences. He became a published composer for the first time in 2015, when Colla Voce Music published his setting of Gloria! for mixed voice choir. In 2017, Spencer became the first winner of the George Shirley Art Song Composition Prize. In 2021, Spencer's setting of Langston Hughes's poem Dream Variations was performed by tenor Lawrence Brownlee at the Hamburg International Music Festival in Hamburg, Germany.
