The Green Hill Junior Choir & Duet Book
for Soprano and Alto Voices

Edited by Katharine K. Davis

From the original Preface

The anthems in this book have been chosen from the best religious music of many churches, countries and centuries. The music was originally composed for mixed voices, accompanied or unaccompanied with the exception of the traditional airs and carols and three songs (by Beethoven, Franck, and Mendelssohn) for solo voice. In arranging it for two-part chorus, it has been necessary to make some alterations in voice-leading, and occasionally to fill out the accompaniment to secure proper balance; but there have been no alterations or “simplifications” of harmony or rhythm. The alto part added to the Mendelssohn aria is, of course, completely new – a contrapuntal addition which may offend some hearers; however, the arranger takes full responsibility for it and does not ascribe it to Mendelssohn.

Much of the music was set to texts in other languages – Latin, Russian, German, and French. When it has been possible, translations have been used which followed the original text. When the theology expressed has been made to retain the fundamental emotion of the text through expressing it in other terms. In one or two instances, English texts have been selected on their own merit and joined to a suitable carol or choral not too strongly associated with other words. In the case of music set originally to English texts, no alterations have been made.

The music is within the technical and emotional range of young people, but it is hoped that adult choirs also will find it suited to many needs.
