Winter 2007 NEW ISSUE
SACRED CHORAL — Mixed Chorus and Organ
CRAIG DeALMEIDA [b. 1976]: Peace for the Nations
• SATB & Organ • #6438 • $2.65 • c. 6:00
“The text was chosen in response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the
warfare that ensued. It is to be hoped that the impact of these events might be
dissolved by a true commitment to peace. This hope is reflected in the anthem by
the violent beginning being washed away by the end.”—Craig DeAlmeida

“The three verses, which are framed by the solos, tell of the descent of a white

modal quality.”—Derek Healey

DAVID EVAN THOMAS [b. 1958]: An Echoing Song
• SATB Soli, SATB & Organ • #6585 • $2.15 • c. 4:30
“The poems of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Stundenbuch (The Book of Hours) speak of
a close personal relationship between soul and deity, etched with bold images
from the physical world. I found the expanding gyre of Rilke’s poem emblematic
of the potential of the individual, and thus of our stewardship. Our ever-widening
rings have a center, but are our actions prophetic, reactive, or merely routine?”
“An Echoing Song is also a complement to my anthem A Joyful Symphony (Catalog
No. 6587), which also takes its title from its last line, but while A Joyful Symphony
is affirming and celebratory, An Echoing Song raises only questions.”—David Evan Thomas

ROBERT APPLEBAUM [b. 1941]: Psalm 116:16 (Truly Lord, I am Free/Ana Adonai)
• SA Soli, SATB • #6116 • $2.15 • c. 3:15
“The King James translation of this verse presents a paradox. ‘Oh Lord, truly I
am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.’ The
psalmist speaks of himself as a servant, indeed the son of a servant; yet he is freed
from bondage.
At least two interpretations seem possible. 1) God freed Israel
from bondage in Egypt and Israel’s service to God is to be given throughout all
generations. 2) Service to God is liberating, allowing us to break the psychological
chains that we fashion for ourselves. It is the latter interpretation that is emphasized
in the English translation employed in this setting.”—Robert Applebaum
This edition includes the lyrics both in English and in Hebrew and a pronunciation
guide for the Hebrew words. The English translation is by the composer.

“Voices of Earth comprises settings of three nature poems by the Canadian poet, Archibald Lampman (1861–1899). The softly flowing melodies with undulating piano accompaniment in the opening song, The Bird and the Hour, reflect an idyllic scene of a hermit bird singing in the quiet Ontario
countryside. The poet’s metaphor, the passing from day to night, is
expressed by his poignant last lines, ‘Out of the silent wood, from the closing
door of another world, another lovelier mood, hear’st thou the hermit pour — so
sweet! so magical! — his golden music, ghostly beautiful.’ ”
